Systems Admin

Austin, TX or Chicago, ILFull-time

About Synteq

Synteq designs and operates our own enterprise-grade GPU, bare metal, virtualized compute, and storage platforms on our own network. We rack the servers, peer the fiber, write the automation, and handle every support ticket in-house ourselves.

We’ve built multi-site infrastructure across the U.S., launched Synteq Cloud, and recently shipped Apps & Serverless Function, the first in our developer ecosystem and PaaS expansion.

About the Role

We’re hiring a Systems Administrator (title flexible — we’ll shape it around the right person).

This is a hands-on infrastructure role focused on building, operating, and hardening the systems that power our multi-site platform. You’ll work across hypervisors, distributed storage, networking, and automation — setting up and managing environments like Proxmox, configuring Ceph clusters, deploying and tuning hypervisors, and keeping our bare-metal and virtualized infrastructure reliable and efficient. You’ll own real production systems end-to-end, from initial racking and configuration through ongoing operations and improvement.

Who You Are

- High-agency and driven with a bias to action.

- Get energized taking on hard, unconventional, and unique challenges from 0 to 1.

- Own and solve ambiguous, high-stakes problems that don’t fit neatly into any department or job description.

- Comfortable with Linux systems, hypervisors, and distributed storage.

- Prefer understanding how the stack actually works over treating it as a black box.

You might come from either of these backgrounds:

- Systems administration or infrastructure engineering roles running Proxmox, KVM, or similar hypervisors at scale

- Hands-on experience deploying and operating Ceph (or equivalent distributed storage) in production

- Bare-metal and multi-site data center operations, including networking and hardware lifecycle

- Roles where you owned the full stack from hardware through virtualization and storage rather than specializing in only one layer

How Success Will Be Measured

- The platform becomes more reliable and less toil-heavy over time

- Systems you own stay healthy, observable, and easy to operate as we scale

- You leave clear, durable improvements in configuration, automation, and operational practices

Working Here

At Synteq we are a fan of light management and high ownership. We thrive on a culture of rigorous engineering, and care about correct systems, tradeoffs, and solving hard problems properly.

If you like figuring things out, starting with nothing and building to something, and computers, we think you’d be a great fit.

Compensation

Competitive base, equity, benefits, and variable component. Exact numbers depend on experience and location. Details will be shared during the process.
